I bought this book, by Λένα Διβάνη, the last time I flew back to the UK from Ελ. Βενιζέλος airport. I just liked the title and the cover!
It's not actually a novel. It's a collection of essays and articles previously published by the author in magazines, on-line etc. As such, each "chapter" can be read independently, and it's a great book to dip in and out of.
The various articles, however, do make up a unified whole of sorts. It's a great insight into modern Greece through the eyes of a woman, charting her life from childhood (outside Athens) through to student life and adulthood, commenting on life in Athens, the way women are perceived etc.
The language is fairly simple, closer to spoken Greek than literary Greek.
I'd thouroughly recommend the book to anyone who wants to improve their Greek, and learn quite a bit about modern-day Greek society at the same time.
