Hello and welcome.

First press the colon key (it’s the first key to the right of the L key) and then the vowel you want.

Hello!!!  well.....three years ago i went to Greece for a summer job....i liked the way it sounds, i learned some words but i wasn't really interested in learning the language because at first sight it seems impossible to be learned...then , next year i went again..i learned some more words....i have also remembered the words i learned one year before.....i started to speak phrases (u can imagine that i was not speaking correctly) and the language became really interesting to me..that summer i bought from there a dictionary and one grammar book. i had to return to my country and then to go to italy for some months...there i had to learn another language so i couldn't study anymore the greek language......this summer i went again in greece really interested in learning greek...and now, being at home, i really want to learn greek properly. i'm trying to do my best!

Γειάσου, Γκάμπρι!

The other combinations for the accents that you may find useful are:

Shift (i.e. the upward pointing arrow for capital letters) plus colon at the same time, followed by the vowel ( ϊ )
Control, Alt plus colon all at the same time, followed by the vowel ( ΐ )

Have fun!

Simon.

Now you've asked me a good one - it's not that common an accent marking.  I know I've both seen and used it in writing, but I can't think of an example off the top of my head.

Basically ΄ is a simple stress mark, telling you which vowel to stress.

The ¨ ιs used where there is what is normally a double vowel combination, but instead each vowel has its' independent value.  This can be indicated by a stress mark on the first of the two vowels (hence I spell my name in Greek as "Σάιμον" in order that it can be pronounced more or less as in the English; otherwise, it would be pronounced "Sehmon") but if the stress actually falls elsewhere, you would use this mark instead (as in παϊδάκι - "cutlet").

The ΅ ιs a combination of the two marks, though that is not so clear on the typeface on this site, and is used where you need to give each vowel its' separate value, but the second vowel actually carries the stress.  So "αί" = English ai as in "air", άι approximates to the i in Simon (try pronouncing a and ee quickly putting the stress on the "a"), while αΐ would move the stress onto the "ee" sound.

I'll have to puzzle to remember an actual example, however.

As an example of ΐ, take the word for the month of May - Μάιος.  In the nominative the stress falls on the first syllable, as shown.

However, if you want to say "the 1st of May", you have to use the genitive form of "May", and the stress shifts forward by one syllable.  If we only moved the accent mark, then it would be «αί» which is pronounced the same as ε.  So we have to use ΐ as in «η πρώτη Μαΐου» to show the difference between the diphthong «αί» and the two-syllable «αΐ».

hello and a belated welcome from me too. I hope you find this site both interesting and useful. I am learning Greek by myself and don't have many opportunities for talking, but I muddle through to read and write. Whatever the problem I have, this site helps me and always someone will have the solution.

(I wish you) good success on the journey with Greek, greetings, Euryn

Φυσικά!  Ηλίθιος είμαι!!!
