Links :: Websites for Learners
Here is a list of websites related directly to the Greek language,
and/or for people who are learning Greek (that is, not bookshops, news
sites etc - which have their own pages which you can find in the menu
above). If you have any other links to add to this list, please don't
hesitate to let
us know.
Online Courses
(NB - the links below refer to courses whose content is wholly or
substantially hosted online, rather than simply advertised online. For
websites offering more traditional courses - such as classroom-based, or
tapes/CDs/textbooks - please refer to the link pages for bookshops, tutors or formal courses).
Talk Greek is an excellent on-line
(very) basic beginners' Greek course produced by Karen Rich for the
BBC. It sort of accompanies the Talk Greek TV series (6 x 20 minute
programmes) that's been shown on the BBC2 Learning Zone (the shows
and website were launched together in May 2004).
J. David Eisenberg has created a tutorial which
you can use online or download onto your hard drive. Learn letters,
sounds, words and foundational grammar.
Kypros.org offers 105 totally free
audio lessons to hear online, plus discussion boards, an online
dictionary and all sorts of other things to accompany the course. The
lessons are taken from a Cypriot radio series from the 1960s, and are
an absolute must for anyone serious about using the Internet to help
them learn Greek (indeed, you will find very few "experienced" online
learners who don't recommend this site to you at some point!)
Unfortunately, the site suffers from frequent downtime, so
to avoid disappointment, it's best not to assume it'll appear when
you click this link :-(
However...
...the audio for the Kypros.org course is
actually owned by the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation, and is
hosted on their site, which is less prone to disappearing off the web
for days on end (and their audio is of higher quality too!)
History of the Greek Language
If you are interested in the
Greek Language in any way, whether generally, historically or just
Modern Greek you should check out Katerina Sarri's fascinating
site.
You will find an absolute wealth of information
& links to other sources.
Translation & Related Information
Translatum.gr is the first Greek Translation
Vortal. Its aim is to provide an extensive reference tool for all the
matters which involve translators in general, and Greek translators in
particular.
Contains links to many other useful resources
including their Link Button which allows you to quickly get a quality
translation from English into Greek and vice versa for any word in any
webpage using the
in.gr dictionary!
Excellent Greek-English/English-Greek online
dictionary from in.gr (a renowned Greek portal). Simply enter
a word in Greek or English in the box and hit "Μετάφραση" to see the
translation (which will appear in a new page).
Lots of phrases, idioms and slang tend to come back with the results,
and some translations may be a bit odd! (Automated translation is
still a big problem in general though, it's not limited to this site
alone!)
